Safer Spaces
Safer Spaces at The Naked Tea Party
The Naked Tea Party is a space that celebrates diversity, community, and authentic expression. We expect all participants (including guests, team members, artists) to respect themselves as well as one another, to ask for consent in all interactions, and to be tolerant of differences. Our aim is for everyone at The Naked Tea Party to feel safe, welcome, and included within our container. No one at The Naked Tea Party should fall victim to discrimination such as racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, or any other form of violence or injustice. In the case of an incident of discrimination or injustice at our event, members of our team can be found at the tea station or walking around the event with a golden halo; these people are always approachable when anyone needs support.
When to get help?
*If you feel uncomfortable or unwell,
*if you have experienced or witnessed an act of violence or discrimination,
*if someone crossed your boundary physically, verbally, or otherwise,
*if you do not feel safe for whatever reason
Our team is happy to assist you to offer or help you get the support you need.
It is our priority to ensure a safer space for everyone, this includes physical, mental, & emotional security.
Who are we?
The Naked Tea Party has between 15-20 team members present to hold the space of each event. ‘Tea fairies’ will prepare and serve tea throughout the entirety of the event, ‘awareness angels’ will roam the space keeping their eyes open for anything that needs attention, ‘door keepers’ are always on duty making sure each person who enters understands and agrees to the guidelines of the space and does not allow anyone to enter who is overly intoxicated or does not agree to the guidelines, and a manager is always on duty, overseeing all tasks and positions. The Naked Tea Party has completed various trainings on diversity-sensitive awareness; and we gather as a group regularly to discuss our protocol and decide when any adjustments are needed.
Protocol
In the event of an incident, we stand in solidarity with those who are negatively affected by an experience of violence in our space. We will care for the affected person by listening to them, asking what they need and how they would like us to move forward; if more support is needed beyond what we can offer, we connect them to people or services that can better support. In the case of a violation where someone feels unsafe in the presence of another person, we will ask the person who has caused the harm (knowingly or unknowingly) to leave the event without a refund. In the rare event of the removal of a participant from the space, we will note the incident, and take the contact information of those involved. A followup dialogue with those involved will be initiated by our team within ten days of the incident. To report an incident outside of our events you can complete the form here, which is also listed on our website & instagram page.
Awareness at The Naked Tea Party is crucial to maintaining the security of this intimate & vulnerable space. Our awareness concept is ever evolving and continuously up to refinement as we see better practices and protocols that support our event and community best. We expect and encourage all participants to know what they need to feel comfortable and safe, and to ask for support if they ever feel they need it.
